Brief overview of Mike Ruff’s proposed IMA presentation:

  • Introduction to behavioral economics, finance, and accounting
  • Identification of types of conscious and unconscious psychological biases that many of us harbor, e.g.
    • Fundamental attribution error (“Halo effect” – we judge others based on first impressions).
    • Overconfidence bias – we overestimate how long it takes to complete a task or job.
    • Decision making heuristics – we are cognitively “lazy” and take mental shortcuts.
    • Social conformity biases – we tend to follow the norms and culture of a group, instead of making our own judgments and decisions.
  • Discussions on how to identify and overcome these biases
  • Listing of additional resources if individuals wish to follow up on these topics after the presentation.
